Honestly, I love more salsa music than songs....
I'm the opposite. I love salsa songs with lyrics but not into the instrumentals. I like to sing along and I like the stories they tell. But it's a pretty song.
I assume you understand the language I do not understand the language and for me, singer's voice is like one more musical instrument. Usually I like it, sometimes I do not. I want to learn Spanish because it will help me to understand salsa songs better as well as Latin culture. A song is not just music it is also poetry, and you are right, the music and the words together dictate how we suppose to dance.
If I really like a song I'll look up the translate lyrics to know what the song is all about. Sometimes with surprising results.
For me song or instrumental doesn't matter with regard to salsa. I'll enjoy good songs equally.
If you know the meaning of a song, does it affect how you dance?
Of course if my partner allows it.
It could be a nice experiment. At first, you dance to a song, after you read translation and dance again. I think it is going to be two different dances
