Yeah, i saw stuff on FB about TLN's 5th anniversary, I would've loved to go to! It's one of my favorite NY socials, the times I went the music was awesome! I think that's why it's better than Dancesport, plus of course because it attracts better dancers.

We will be in NYC in mid September. Where can we dance to Puerto Rican on1 salsa (salsa clásica) during the week (Tuesday to Thursday)? We are not interested in NY on2 salsa, my hubby does not like to dance to that.

That is to say: We do not care if other people dance on2 or on1, we just want to dance to music we like. So it can be a place where everybody else dances on2 but it should be a place where they play typical PR salsa that old school PR salsa dancers like to dance to, e. g. El Gran Combo, Frankie Ruiz, Maelo, Hector Tricoche, Rey Ruiz, Anthony Cruz, Lalo Rodriguez, Willy Rosario, Adalberto Santiago, Eddie Palmieri etc.

I checked on the Taino Towers but it seems that there are no regular salsa nights anymore.

Great! What are the exact dates you will be in NY? There are a lot of "old school" events but a lot of them are on the weekends (outdoors events, etc.). If you can only dance Tuesday to Thursday, here is where you can go:

    Tuesday:
Wed -- no regular events that I know of.
    Thursday:

Of all these, I have only been to the Empire City Casino night so I can't personally vouch for any of the other events.

Thanks, Sabrosura! I was hoping you would chime in here ;).

I see that Luís Damón will play in club No. 2 above on Sep. 13. We have one of his CDs, I believe. He is OK and I hope we will be able to make it there on that day. We will be in NYC from Sep. 13-15.

Another question: How safe or unsafe are the neighborhoods where these clubs are located?

We are back from NYC. Thanks again to Sabrosura for your tips.

We went to Empire City Casino in Yonkers on a Tuesday. This is not a dance club, it is a stage, a dance floor and a bar in the middle of a huge casino surrounded by slot machines. They have a live band on Tuesdays from 8:00 to 10:30 pm. The audience seems to be mostly Newyorican/Puerto Rican and is between 50 and 80 in age. No show-offs, everybody is there to have fun! And yes, they do have fun! The entrance to the casino is free.

The music was nice and we liked it. It was the kind of ambiente we were looking for and we had a nice dance evening.

However, if we had to do it again, we would not do it because of the freeking traffic in NYC. I recommend going there only if you stay somewhere in direction of Yonkers, i. e. north or NE of Manhattan. Otherwise it will take you forever to get there. Traffic is stop and go in all of NYC all of the day and also at night, no matter if you are in Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens or Brooklyn.

    Dear New York,

If I had to choose Fri, Sat, Sun -- March 2nd till 5th or Sat, Sun, Mon -- March 11th till 13th. Which would it be?
Preferences: Original connected dancing. Live salsa. Rare salsa. Classic salsa. Cross-body salsa. Friendly folks.

First level of comparison is whether it is an LVG Sunday -- which March 13 is, so March 11-13 immediately trumps March 2-5. Second advantage of March 11-13 is you will catch a night at Taj, which has live bands on Monday nights. So, March 11-13 wins.

Suggested schedule (keep in mind the US moves to daylight savings time that weekend):

    Sat March 11:
    Salsa Brunch in Harlem 1-5pm (http://www.salsanewyork.com/events/salsa-brunch.htm) -- I haven't been yet but have heard good reports from friends and it sounds like a great way to spend a Sat afternoon;
Salsamania 11 pm - 3 am at Dancesport -- music is ok/good, personally I don't like the leads there and it's not among my favorite parties, but guys generally enjoy it, so you'll probably have a good time
Sun March 12: LVG 6:30 -10 pm (if you get there before 7 and get on their email list you get a discount), Las Chicas Locas 11 pm - 2 am at Dancesport
    Mon March 13: Taj 8:30 pm - 2 am (https://www.facebook.com/LatinMondaysAtTaj/)

Timezones. Did not consider that, thanks.

    Lvg really starts at 7?

Timezones? It's just that the US generally moves to summer time (daylight savings time) earlier than Europe, so just wanted to make sure you were aware the transition happens that weekend in case you're coming straight from Europe to NY, wouldn't want you to miss an hour of LVG ;) At 2 am Sunday morning (March 12) the time will move one hour forward.

LVG official start time is 6 pm and a lot of people arrive between 6:30-7 because of the before-7 pm discount ($12 instead of $14). So by 7 pm it is generally in full party mode.

We're in NYC right now. If any of the local dancers who haven't heard from us want to hook up, we'll be at Salsamania tonight and LVG/LCL tomorrow.
