This is a screenshot of my laptop. I use both Serato DJ and Cross DJ specifically because both allow the use of crates that are not buried in a directory structure or "tree". That, along with the color file encoding both have, allows for very rapid finding of songs (very important for me - a Gringo with poor Spanish language skills ;)). Note also Roberto Torres' "Caballo Viejo" is the long 7 minute original version, but has been "limited" in Audacity. Basically, an effect that cuts back the flute that tries to rip your ears out!

Some of the best tracks are far faster. Taking the edge off of the songs allows people to enjoy them while dancing and not feel that the song is inaccessible to them as a dancer. That's particularly true for the first hour of a social when the talent level is lower. What's a good example....Arrepientete for instance. Dropping it down 5% doesn't have a huge effect on how much you enjoy the song, but it makes it far easier to dance to.

I used to use Winamp with a super useful speed changing app that memorized the speed of the song that was played. It's crazy how such a simple utility is missing on far more expensive software. The same app didn't change the pitch. On that level, I do miss it.

I'm surprised that speed change is not more common among DJs.

I don't need the software to remember that for me. I'm the DJ and I'm always adjusting things depending upon the energy level of the crowd - in fact, I'll sometimes speed a song up. The only reason I have slower versions prepared to use ahead of time (if it's warranted) is so they sound better. Again, most DJ software does not sound good when adjusting the Tempo more than 5%. The exception to this is a $29 plug-in for the full version Serato DJ called Pitch'N Time, but it uses a lot of CPU, and your laptop should probably have an i7 if you're going to use it live.

Sure - but I still don't get why you have to do this to 'every single song' you play. Do you specialise in only playing fast songs slowed down?

    It's not every song obviously.

So do you change the speed of tunes that aren't particularly fast or slow? E.g. do you play tunes such as Pobrecita (La Máxima 79), and if so do you feel the need to change its speed?

    Porbrecita is the perfect speed.

i very seldom change the tempo of a salsa song, at least by much anyways.but i would just do it live, no need to get the computer to record the tempo change, unless that is , you are planning on leaving the computer to play the music by itself.
I dont know of any DJ software off hand that remembers tempo changes as such, and I would find it annoying anyways, because then it will always play that song at the wrong tempo unless you tell it otherwise. wouldnt it? perhaps one solution is to make a new copy of the song at a different tempo and label it accordingly, you could do this by hitting record next time you play the song in your DJ software. or you could use a DAW like cubase which might give you better results with time-stretching. unless you like the pitch change too
