Re: Vintage/Forgotten salsa albums - - question for collecto

I have been looking for a rare Colombian album for a long time:

Los Super Seven del Swing - Picanton.....

I have never heard of the Jimmy y Su Tumbao..What is that like.
Also Mon Carrillo has two albums that I know of.

Re: Vintage/Forgotten salsa albums - - question for collecto

I do like this album quite a lot actually. At first I was not too impressed, but it has grown on me. My favorite songs from this are "Silencio" "Celoso" "Carlota" and the descarga "Descarga Improvisada".

It actually reminds me a lot of the sound of the Julian y Su Combo albums which I think is one of Colombia's most talented musicians from that era along with Fruko of course, but Julian was a low profile musician on the smaller label INS (and others) while Fruko was on the "Fania" of Colombia, discos Fuentes...

There are a whole big bunch of groups like these out of Colombia that all have some great sound and free spirit to just let loose! The majority did of course not get any distribution up north to the US, but are only found in Venezuela, Peru, Panama and other South American countries.

Hi Nik,

No, I meant Los Seven del Swing! I actually don't know Jimmy y Su Tumbao,
and would appreciate some more information on it. El flaco rumbero, do you know the label this was issued on? Country?

the Jimmy y su Tumbao album is a great one - - groovy and smooth.....bad part is, there is no artist information.....no credits......nothing.....they seem to be a little garage band out of God knows where but with a swinging sound - - let me ask around to see if I can find some info about them.....

they play with an electric guitar of sorts instead of piano and a vibraphone adorning the background - - and I mean the adornment.....it sounds really really slick and unique! They guy's voice is strong....demanding respect, almost....it's awesome.....fits really well with the heavy sound of the band.....

Key Tracks: Nuevo Ritmo, El Mejor del Barrio, Llegare, Amistad y Hermandad

Mon carrillo....I know of 3 albums......

1) Aqui esta el sabor (really good too)
2) Vocal by Melchor on Bambuco records <<<<-------this one!!!
3) Mon Carrillo y su orquesta salsa suprema - vocals larry & cesar francia y carlos pineiro on betarecord (I don't have this one....but would like to.....)
4) I've heard mention of another - - not sure though.....

Yes, the coro goes "Negra Santa" but I believe the song is called Celoso. I really like the flavor of the sonero on this one. These guys do a lot of references to Ismael Rivera in their songs (no covers though, yay!)

Yes, correct: I recently went to know:

HIDDEN COLOMBIA

- Los Supremos
- Sexteto Miramar
- Michi Sarmiento y su Combo Bravo

HIDDEN PERU

- Pedro Miguel y sus Maracaibos
- Luciano Luciani

and God knows how many hidden gems are over there!!!

MOst of them play both Salsas and Cumbias, and their Salsa are killer!

One question please: where is Mon Carrillo from?

......from my understanding, he is from Venezuela..........and weirdly, there is only one reference off of google I can find that even mentions his name....but his 4th album he sings to Caracas.....so, hmm...i'm guessing that is correct.....
