Johnny Colon, Pete Rodriguez, Eddie Palmieri, Joe Cuba. Most throughout the early sixties. Tons of great boogaloo tracks
I'm no expert on this genre however about 20 years ago I bought a compilation with a certain boogaloo track on it that I now consider to be about my favourite:
Johnny Zamot - Johnny's Boogaloo
That tune is HEAVY.
Also Summertime Blues by Lebron Brothers, numerous tracks by Joe Bataan and Federico Boogaloo by Federico.
When it comes to the new generation of boogaloo, one of my friends takes boogaloo lessons and she loves Galante Boogaloo by Jerry Galante (apparently the original era boogaloos are too slow for the style of boogaloo dancing that is popular in Colombia, which is why the Colombian DJs used to speed up the tunes back in the day).
I know some DJs who collect original era boogaloos, if you need more recommendations I'll try to find some of their lists, there's an El Gran Combo tune they go for.
Good luck with your project.
The El Gran Combo tune is Clap Your Hands.
Other tracks recommended (I mean by boogaloo collectors, I've not heard these myself) are:
Latin Dimension - Mr Mod
Feddie and Henchi - Biscuits and Buttermilk
And compilations:
El Barrio: The Bad Boogaloo
The Rough Guide To Boogaloo
Explosivos on Vampisoul
I've not got any of these incidentally but I have seen them recommended by people who are into that sound (most/all of whom would never listen to salsa incidentally, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy them too).
Is boogaloo (original and/or new school) popular in Miami?
Is boogaloo (original and/or new school) popular in Miami?
Who'd of thought that a genre so despised during its infancy would be internationally popular 45 years later?
Check out the Boogaloo to Salsa in the Video Clips section. Not bad
